About Track Lights
Track lighting is one of the most versatile ways to light a space. Whether you're illuminating a kitchen worktop, a gallery wall, or an entire retail floor, a well-specified track system gives you focused, flexible light that fixed fittings simply can't match. Browse our full range of 1 circuit track lights, 3 circuit track lights, and magnetic track lighting, all available with next-working-day delivery.
You might encounter track lighting in a gallery or a high-end retail store with an elegant row of spotlights angled with surgical precision on the thing it's meant to celebrate. What you may not realise is that the same technology, and the same logic, applies just as powerfully at home. A run of track above a kitchen island, a scheme of adjustable heads across a living room ceiling, and a system that layers ambient and task light without a single recessed hole being cut. Track lighting delivers all of this, and it does it with far less disruption than most alternatives.
The most important decision you'll make is the circuit. A 1 circuit track is the simpler, more affordable option, as every light on the run switches on and off together. This is ideal for focused task areas, small retail bays, or any space where one mood is all you need.
A 3 circuit track allows for more flexibility, as three independently switchable circuits on a single length of track give you the control to highlight a product display on one circuit, provide ambient fill on another, and accent a feature wall on a third.
For the most flexible installation of all, magnetic track lighting lets you reposition heads anywhere along the track with no tools required, just the click of a magnet.
Lyco stocks our own Lyco Track and Edit Circuit Track ranges, alongside the accessories and components you need to complete any installation. Every order over £70 qualifies for free delivery, and with same-day dispatch on 98% of in-stock products, your project doesn't have to wait.
A 1-circuit track means all the spotlights on the track are controlled as a single group, meaning they all switch on and off together. A 3-circuit track contains three separate electrical conductors within the same track rail, allowing you to assign each light to one of three independently controlled circuits. This is especially useful in commercial or open-plan environments where you want to switch or dim different zones without installing separate tracks or additional wiring runs.
Yes, in most cases. Many track heads feature a tilt range of up to 200° or more, which means they can be angled to deliver light vertically downward even when mounted at an angle. Some systems also offer angled feed-in connectors or adjustable canopies specifically designed for pitched ceilings. If your ceiling slope is particularly steep, it's worth checking the tilt specification of the individual head before purchasing, or speaking to our technical team, who can advise on the right product for your installation.
The number of spotlights a track can support depends on its wattage rating and the wattage of each individual head. Most standard residential and light commercial track systems are rated at 2,000–3,000 W per circuit. With modern LED track heads typically drawing between 7W and 15W, a single track run can comfortably support a significant number of fittings. Divide the track's maximum wattage by the wattage of your chosen head, and that gives you your upper limit. For a 3-circuit system, that limit applies per circuit, not in total, giving you far greater overall capacity.
Not quite. Standard track lighting (1 or 3 circuit) uses a mechanical lock or spring clip to secure each head in position, and heads are added or removed by sliding them in from the end of the track. Magnetic track systems use a low-voltage DC track (typically 48V) with a magnetic mount, meaning individual fixtures snap into place anywhere along the track at any point. This makes magnetic systems significantly more flexible and faster to reconfigure, which is why they've become a favourite for retail and hospitality fit-outs that change regularly.
It depends entirely on the application. For retail and gallery environments where accurate colour rendering is critical, a cooler daylight white (5,000–6,500K) or a neutral white (4,000K) will show merchandise and artwork in the most faithful light possible. For residential use a warm white (2,700–3,000 K) creates a more welcoming atmosphere without the clinical edge of commercial tones.
