About Magnetic Track Lights

Magnetic track lighting works on a simple principle. A low-voltage DC current runs through a slim aluminium rail, and spotlight heads or linear modules snap into place anywhere along it using magnets. No spring clips, no sliding from the end, no tools. Our magnetic LED track lights run on a 48V system, available in surface-mounted, suspended, and recessed magnetic track lighting configurations to suit everything from a kitchen renovation to a considered commercial fit-out. Complete your installation with our magnetic track accessories.

Why Magnetic Track Is Different

Standard track lighting (whether 1 or 3 circuit) runs at mains voltage (240V AC). Magnetic track lighting systems operate at 48V DC, which is supplied by a driver that steps down the mains supply before it reaches the track. That lower voltage is what makes the magnetic attachment safe. Because the conductors on the surface of the rail carry low-voltage DC current rather than mains voltage, there's no danger in touching them, and no need to lock heads into position with mechanical fasteners.

On a standard track, adding or moving a head means sliding it to the end, unlocking it, and refitting it. On a magnetic track lighting system, you lift a head off and press it back down somewhere else. The magnet makes the connection, powers the fitting, and holds it in place.

The 48V magnetic track lighting range is available in three mounting configurations.

Surface-mounted track sits against the ceiling and is the most straightforward to install. The track is fixed with screws and connected to the driver, which can be concealed above the ceiling or in an adjacent void.

Recessed magnetic track lighting sits flush within the ceiling plane, leaving only the narrow aperture of the rail visible from below. It produces some of the cleanest, most architectural lighting installations achievable with a flexible system and is particularly popular in new builds and high-specification renovations.

Suspended configurations drop the track below the ceiling on cables, which suits higher ceilings or spaces where the track itself is intended to be a visible design element.

Because the magnetic LED track lights in this range operate on a DC driver, many are compatible with DALI dimming protocols or wireless control systems, making them straightforward to integrate into a wider smart home or building management setup.

For the components needed to complete any of these configurations, see our magnetic track accessories. Orders over £70 qualify for free delivery, with same-day dispatch on the majority of in-stock products.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes magnetic track lighting different from standard track lighting?

The key difference is voltage and how heads connect to the track. Standard 1 and 3 circuit track systems run at mains voltage (240V AC), with heads that lock mechanically into the rail. Magnetic track lighting uses a 48V DC supply provided by a driver, with heads that attach directly to the surface of the rail via magnets. The low voltage makes the track surface safe to touch, which is what allows heads to be freely placed and repositioned without any tools or locking mechanisms.

Can I reposition magnetic track lights myself, or do I need an electrician?

Repositioning the heads along an installed magnetic track is something anyone can do. You simply lift the head off the rail and press it back down in the new position. No tools, no switches to turn off first, no electrical work involved. The initial installation of the track and driver does require a qualified electrician, as it involves connecting the driver to the mains supply.

What is a 48V magnetic track lighting driver and do I need one?

Yes, every magnetic track lighting system requires a driver. The driver converts the 240V AC mains supply into the 48V DC current that the track runs on. It's typically installed above the ceiling or in an adjacent void, out of sight.

Drivers are rated by their maximum wattage output, and you need a driver with enough capacity to power all the heads on the track simultaneously. A single driver can power up to around 10 metres of track, depending on the load. If your installation requires longer runs or multiple sections, additional drivers will be needed.

Is recessed magnetic track lighting harder to install than surface-mounted?

The electrical connections for both are identical. A surface-mounted track mounts directly against the finished ceiling, so installation is relatively straightforward for a qualified electrician. Recessed magnetic track lighting requires a channel to be cut into the ceiling, which means more preparation, more skill, and in most cases, work that should be completed before plastering and finishing.

Are magnetic track lights suitable for use in kitchens or bathrooms?

Most magnetic track heads carry an IP20 rating, which is appropriate for dry indoor areas such as kitchens and living spaces away from immediate water sources. They are not suitable for use in bathrooms or above kitchen sinks where a higher IP rating (IP44 or IP65) is required. For any installation where moisture is a concern, always check the IP rating of the specific product before ordering.
