About Solar Street Lights
Solar street lights are self-contained road and pathway lighting units, LED lantern, solar panel, battery, and controller in a single column-mounted system that requires no mains grid connection. They're used for rural roads, car park areas, and locations where grid infrastructure costs are prohibitive. Browse alongside public street lights for grid-connected options and the full street lighting range.
The case for solar street lights is strongest in locations where connecting to the mains grid is genuinely expensive or impractical, remote rural roads, temporary construction access roads, off-grid car parks, and rural community facilities. In these applications, the cost of civil works to bring grid power to a column can easily exceed the cost of a solar street light system, making the lifecycle economics straightforward.
Modern all-in-one solar street lights combine the lantern head, solar panel, lithium battery pack, and intelligent charge controller in a single unit mounted on top of a standard street light column. Integrated PIR sensing allows the lantern to operate at full output when vehicles or pedestrians are detected and dim to a standby level at other times, significantly extending battery autonomy on overcast days or during periods of reduced solar charge.
The principal limitation remains winter performance in the UK, a solar street light in northern Scotland in December has substantially less charging resource than the same fitting in Dorset in July. Battery capacity and panel area must be sized for the latitude and expected worst-case solar irradiance of the installation location. For any safety-critical road lighting application, a qualified lighting designer should confirm the specification. For grid-connected road lighting, see public street lights and residential street lights. Lyco offers free delivery on all orders over £70.
Are solar street lights reliable enough for road safety lighting?
Quality solar street lights with appropriately sized panels and battery packs for their installation latitude can deliver reliable road lighting output year-round, including UK winter conditions. However, the specification must be carefully matched to the location, a solar street light adequately sized for southern England may be undersized for northern Scotland. Any road safety-critical application should be designed by a qualified lighting engineer.
How are solar street lights installed?
Solar street lights require a standard street lighting column foundation, a concrete base with a column bolt circle. The column is erected and the solar lantern head, which contains all electrical components including the battery, is mounted at the top. No mains cable or ducting is required from the column base, though earthing of the column is still required in accordance with BS 7671.
What happens to solar street lights during extended periods of bad weather?
Most modern solar street lights are designed with sufficient battery capacity to maintain output through several consecutive overcast days, typically 3–5 days of autonomy at reduced output levels. Intelligent dimming profiles (lower output between midnight and 5am, for example) extend this further. In worst-case extended bad weather conditions, the fitting will reduce output or switch off; this should be accounted for in safety-critical applications.
Can existing street light columns be retrofitted with solar?
Yes, solar lantern heads are available that can replace conventional wired lanterns on existing columns, converting a grid-connected column to solar operation. The column foundation and mechanical fixings remain in use; the mains cable is disconnected; and the solar lantern head mounts on the existing column top. This is a practical option for reducing energy and infrastructure costs on lower-traffic routes.
