About Outdoor LED Strips
Outdoor LED strips are flexible, weatherproof, LED tape designed for exterior applications, decking step risers, pergola outlines, soffit edges, outdoor kitchen worktops, and architectural feature lighting. Available in IP65 and IP67 ratings for different exposure levels. Browse alongside outdoor LED battens for rigid surface-mounted options and the full outdoor linear lights range.
The flexibility of LED strip tape is what makes it irreplaceable in outdoor lighting schemes. Rigid battens can't follow a curved pergola beam, wrap around a post, or hug the underside of a curved decking handrail. Strip tape can, and with an IP65 or IP67 sleeve, it can do so permanently exposed to the outdoor environment. The result is a continuous line of light that traces the architecture of a structure rather than sitting alongside it.
IP rating determines the exposure level the strip can handle. IP65 (silicone-sleeved) is suitable for sheltered outdoor positions: under a pergola roof, on a covered soffit, or on the underside of an outdoor kitchen canopy where direct rain doesn't reach. IP67 (fully encapsulated) handles direct rain, surface water, and temporary immersion, appropriate for decking step risers, ground-level perimeter lighting, and any position where standing water may contact the tape.
For outdoor strip applications, 24V is the better specification choice over 12V: it handles longer runs with consistent brightness and generally offers better efficacy. All drivers and connection accessories must be rated for outdoor use or housed in weatherproof enclosures.
For structural linear output without the flexibility requirement, outdoor LED battens are the more robust solution. Lyco offers free delivery on all orders over £70.
What is the difference between IP65 and IP67 outdoor LED strips?
IP65 outdoor LED strips have a silicone sleeve over the tape that protects against dust and low-pressure water spray, suitable for sheltered outdoor positions where direct rain doesn't reach. IP67 strips are fully encapsulated in a thicker sleeve providing protection against temporary immersion in up to 1 metre of water for 30 minutes, required for step risers, ground-level perimeter applications, and any position subject to surface water pooling.
Can outdoor LED strips be used on decking?
Yes, IP67 strip is the appropriate choice for decking applications. For step riser illumination, run the strip along the underside of each tread nosing or along the face of each riser. Ensure cables are protected within the deck structure and that any connection points are inside weatherproof junction boxes or housed within the deck framing away from water ingress.
How do I power outdoor LED strips?
Outdoor LED strips require a 12V or 24V DC driver (power supply) rated for the total wattage of the strip run plus 20% headroom. The driver must be housed in a weatherproof enclosure if located outdoors, or positioned indoors with weatherproof cable entry. Always match driver voltage to strip voltage, 12V strips with a 24V driver will fail immediately.
Can outdoor LED strips be cut to length?
Yes, outdoor LED strips can be cut at the designated cut points marked on the tape, typically every 50mm or 100mm. Cuts must be made at these points only. After cutting, the cut end must be sealed with an appropriate IP-rated end cap to maintain water protection.
