About LED Panels
LED panels are the standard ceiling lighting solution for suspended grid ceilings in offices, schools, retail units, healthcare facilities, and light commercial buildings across the UK. A flat, slim fitting that drops into a standard ceiling grid or surface-mounts directly to a solid ceiling, an LED ceiling panel light delivers even, glare-controlled illumination across a wide area from a single fitting.
Our range covers the most widely used formats in recessed, surface-mounted, and suspended configurations, with standard and emergency variants available across the collection.
The 600x600 LED panel is the most widely specified format in UK commercial lighting because it maps directly onto the standard 600x600mm suspended ceiling tile grid used in the vast majority of offices, schools, and retail fit-outs. A single 40W LED panel in this format produces 3,500–4,000 lumens, replacing four fluorescent tubes in a traditional four-tube modular fitting, while consuming a fraction of the energy.
The transition from fluorescent to LED panels has accelerated significantly since the phased withdrawal of T8 and T5 fluorescent lamps from the GB market, and LED panels are now the default specification for any new commercial build or refurbishment.
For spaces without a suspended ceiling, recessed LED panel lights can be installed into solid plasterboard ceilings using a recessed frame. Surface-mounted and suspended options allow panels to be fitted on solid concrete or timber ceilings where recessing is not practical.
The three most important decisions when specifying office LED lighting panels are wattage, colour temperature, and UGR rating.
Wattage determines lumen output; for a standard office environment, 36W–40W at 600x600 is typical.
Colour temperature of 4,000K (neutral white) is the most widely used for task-oriented commercial spaces, offering clarity without the harsh edge of cooler daylight tones.
UGR (Unified Glare Rating) measures how much glare a fitting produces toward the viewer. A UGR of 19 or below is recommended for office and screen-based workspaces to reduce eye strain; and many panels in this range are available with a UGR≤19 specification, which should be the default choice for any installation where occupants spend extended periods at desks or monitors.
All orders over £70 qualify for free delivery, with same-day dispatch on the full LED panel range.
What is the standard size for an office LED panel?
The 600x600mm format is the standard for UK commercial suspended ceilings, as it fits directly into the 600x600mm grid tile system used in most offices, schools, and retail units. 1200x300mm panels are used in the same grid systems for a different visual layout with two panels side by side in a single grid bay. 1200x600mm panels are specified where a larger, more prominent fitting is needed.
For spaces with non-standard ceiling grids, surface-mounted or suspended configurations are available in the same format sizes. Always confirm your ceiling grid dimensions before ordering.
Can LED panels replace fluorescent tube fittings directly?
In many cases, yes. A 600x600 LED panel replaces the older four-tube fluorescent modular fitting that was standard in UK commercial ceilings before the fluorescent phase-out. The LED panel drops into the same ceiling grid opening, connects to the same mains supply, and typically produces comparable or higher lumen output at significantly lower wattage. No ballast or starter is involved as LED panels drive the LEDs directly via an integrated or remote driver. Where an existing fluorescent modular fitting is ceiling-mounted rather than grid-recessed, a surface-mount frame allows the LED panel to be installed in the same position.
What does UGR mean and why does it matter for office lighting?
UGR stands for Unified Glare Rating, which is a measure of the discomfort glare produced by a lighting installation can cause toward the viewer. A lower UGR means less glare.
The recommended maximum for office and screen-based workspaces is UGR≤19, as specified in BS EN 12464-1, the European standard for workplace lighting. Panels with a UGR above 19 can cause visual discomfort and eye fatigue when used in open-plan offices or meeting rooms where people work at screens. A UGR≤19 rating should be specified as standard for any LED ceiling panel light installation in a commercial workspace.
Are LED panel lights suitable for healthcare or food production environments?
Some are. Standard office-grade panels carry an IP20 rating, which is appropriate for dry indoor commercial environments but not for areas subject to moisture, steam, or regular cleaning.
For healthcare environments, food preparation areas, and commercial kitchens, IP44 or IP65-rated panels are available and should be specified. These carry sealed housings that protect against splashing water and dust ingress. The IP rating is listed on each product page, so always check before specifying for any environment where contamination or moisture is a concern.
What is the difference between edge-lit and backlit LED panels?
Edge-lit panels have the LEDs arranged around the perimeter of the panel, with light guided across the face of the fitting by a diffuser layer. They tend to be very slim and produce a clean, even appearance.
Backlit panels have the LEDs positioned directly behind the diffuser across the full face of the panel, which typically produces higher and more consistent lumen output, better uniformity, and is less likely to show visible hotspots at the edges over time. For commercial installations where light output and longevity are the primary considerations, backlit panels are generally the better specification.
