Floodlights are used to provide dramatic, bright, powerful illumination covering a relatively large area. They are usually, but not exclusively used in commercial settings, and they are perfect for lighting car parks, industrial areas and sports arenas. Lyco's range offers a variety of technologies, styles and features to suit whatever requirements you may have.

Every exterior light that we stock is protected against rain and splashing, so you can be sure that your purchase won't let you down in wet weather. Some models are additionally protected against the force of jet sprays, so they won't be damaged by hoses, sprinkler systems or spray cleaning. Why not have a look at our guide to choosing a floodlight.

Strong & Durable Construction

Manufactured from tough, hardwearing, anti- corrosive materials such as ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Sytrene) aluminium, stainless steel and polycarbonates, our fittings are built to last. Many models come with shatterproof, vandal resistant diffusers for extra durability.

A Variety of Sizes

Our floodlights come in a range of sizes from compact 70W models for smaller buildings, through to larger fittings with 400W of lighting power to illuminate a much bigger area.

Dusk to Dawn Sensors

Where floodlighting is required all through the night, some of our models have a dusk to dawn sensor. This sensor turns the light on automatically when the light level falls and turns it off again when the sun rises. This not only saves you having to remember to switch the light on and off every night, but also saves on energy costs as the fittings will only be on when the ambient light level is suitably low.

Choice of Efficient Light Bulbs

All of our flood fittings use efficient lamps with long average lifespan, as these bulbs provide bright light for long periods of time with low running costs. You can choose from various light sources such as Mercury, Metal Halide, Halogen, SON (Sodium), LEDs and even dedicated Low Energy and Solar powered lights.

PIR Security Floodlights

Some of our security lights feature a built-in PIR (Passive Infra Red) movement detector. The powerful light generated by these floodlights are an excellent deterrent against vandals and intruders, improving the security of any building.

Wide range of technologies

Our extensive range of floodlights includes all the following types to ensure that you can enjoy the technology that you prefer:

  • Energy Saving
  • Halogen
  • Mercury
  • Metal Halide
  • SON
  • LED

Illuminate your outdoor spaces with Lyco’s wide range of high-performance floodlights. Whether you need powerful LED floodlights for security, energy-efficient solar floodlights for gardens, or robust commercial floodlighting for car parks and sports areas, our collection has you covered.

What are floodlights?

Floodlights are high-intensity outdoor lights designed to provide a wide beam of illumination across large areas. Often used as security floodlights for homes and businesses, they are also popular for lighting gardens, driveways, car parks, sports facilities, and building exteriors.

Modern LED floodlights offer powerful brightness with low runnings costs, long lifespans, and minimal maintenance compared to traditional halogen models. Available in mains-powered, solar, and motion sensor floodlight options, they provide reliable, weatherproof lighting for safety, security, and outdoor visibility all-year-round.

How much do floodlights cost to run in the UK?

The cost of running floodlights in the UK depends on their wattage, usage time, and your electricity tariff. On average, a traditional 500W halogen floodlight costs around 17p per hour to run (based on 34p/kWh).

LED floodlights, on the other hand, can be considerably cheaper. A 50W LED floodlight can deliver similar brightness, but use up to 90% less electricity, costing approximately 1.7p per hour.

For even lower running costs, solar floodlights are available, using free energy from the sun.

What type of floodlight is best for security?

For home and business security, LED floodlights with PIR motion sensors (or dusk-to-dawn sensors) are the most effective.

These types of floodlights automatically switch on when motion or low light is detected, deterring intruders whilst saving you energy.

Are LED floodlights better than traditional halogen floodlights?

Yes. LED floodlights are more energy-efficient, produce less heat, and have a much longer lifespan than halogen alternatives. They provide powerful illumination with lower running costs, making them the preferred choice for modern installations.

Can floodlights be used in all weather conditions?

Most outdoor floodlights are IP65 rated or higher, meaning they are fully weatherproof and suitable for year-round use, even in heavy rain and harsh conditions.

Always check the IP rating of your chosen floodlight before purchase to ensure suitability for your location.

What size floodlight do I need?

Although this is somewhat subjective, ultimately the required wattage depends on the area you want to illuminate. Below, we’ve set out some common areas and the corresponding wattage needed to illuminate them:

  • 10-30W: small gardens, patios, and driveways.
  • 30-50W: medium-sized outdoor areas, paths, and courtyards.
  • 50-100W: car parks, large gardens, or building exteriors.
  • 100W+: commercial spaces, warehouses, or sports grounds.
