About Batten Lights

A batten light is one of the most practical and widely used fittings in UK lighting: a long, slim luminaire that mounts directly to a ceiling or wall surface and provides broad, even illumination across a room or space. Modern LED batten lights have replaced fluorescent tube battens as the standard choice for garages, warehouses, workshops, utility areas, corridors, and commercial fit-outs, delivering more light from less energy with no warm-up time and no tubes to replace.

Browse our full range below, including LED battens with integrated LED modules, IP65 and non-corrosive variants, and lengths from 2ft to 6ft.

The batten light fitting is a staple for any space that needs reliable, uncomplicated overhead lighting. In domestic settings, they're the standard choice for garages, utility rooms, loft conversions, and workshops; or any spaces where a ceiling rose and pendant fitting would be inadequate and a downlight too fiddly to justify.

The 4ft batten light (1200mm) is the most commonly specified length in UK installations, fitting most standard bays and corridors. 5ft (1500mm) and 6ft (1800mm) battens are used in larger industrial spaces where fewer fittings per run is preferable, and 2ft (600mm) battens suit smaller domestic settings or undercabinet applications.

The choice between a standard and a non-corrosive batten light is determined by the installation environment. A standard fitting is appropriate for dry indoor areas with no significant moisture or dust.

An IP65 batten light (also described as a non-corrosive batten) has a sealed polycarbonate housing that protects the fitting against dust ingress and water jets, making it the correct specification for any space subject to regular hosing down or damp conditions. Non-corrosive batten lights are also specified in coastal or industrial environments where airborne salt or chemical vapours would corrode an unprotected metal housing.

All Lyco batten lights are available with next working day delivery, and orders over £70 qualify for free delivery across the UK mainland.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a batten light and a tube light?

The terms are sometimes used interchangeably, but there is a useful distinction.

  • A tube light usually refers to the lamp itself (traditionally a fluorescent tube, now increasingly an LED T8 tube) which is inserted into a separate batten fitting or housing.

  • A batten light typically refers to the complete fitting, which includes the housing, the driver or gear, and, in the case of modern LED battens, an integrated LED module that replaces both the tube and the gear in a single unit.

LED batten lights with integrated modules are the current standard because they remove the need to source and replace separate tubes.

Can I replace a fluorescent batten fitting with an LED batten?

Yes, and this is one of the most common lighting upgrades carried out in UK commercial and domestic premises. An LED batten light mounts in the same position as an old fluorescent fitting, connects to the same mains supply, and requires no starter or ballast. The old fitting is removed entirely, and the LED batten takes its place.

This is a cleaner and more efficient approach than retrofitting LED tubes into an old fluorescent housing, as it removes ageing gear components and delivers better lumen output per watt. A qualified electrician should carry out the wiring connection.

Are 4ft batten lights suitable for use in a garage?

Yes, and they are one of the most popular choices for garage lighting in the UK. A single 4ft LED batten light at 20W–36W typically produces sufficient light for a single-car garage, while a double fitting or two singles in parallel provide adequate illumination for a larger double garage or workshop. For garages where the fitting might be subject to dust or occasional splashing from car washing, an IP65 batten light offers better long-term performance than a standard indoor fitting.

What length batten light do I need?

The most common lengths are 2ft (600mm), 4ft (1200mm), 5ft (1500mm), and 6ft (1800mm). The right length depends on the space.

  • For standard residential and light commercial applications (garages, corridors, utility rooms), a 4ft fitting is the most practical choice.

  • For larger industrial spaces with higher ceilings and longer bays, 5ft or 6ft fittings provide better output per fitting and reduce the number of connection points needed across a long run.

  • For smaller spaces or under-cabinet use, a 2ft fitting is often the better fit.

Can batten lights be linked together in a continuous run?

Many LED batten light fittings support end-to-end linking, where multiple fittings are connected in a chain from a single power source. This is particularly useful in warehouse aisles, production lines, and long corridors where a consistent run of light is needed without multiple separate electrical connection points.

Check the product specification for whether linking is supported, and what the maximum number of fittings per chain is before ordering.
