About Spotlights
Spotlights are one of the most practical and widely used forms of indoor lighting. Lyco's range of LED spotlights covers everything from simple fixed single heads to multi-arm ceiling plates and GU10 ceiling spotlights in both surface-mounted and bar formats, with options to suit contemporary, traditional, and industrial interiors. For the most flexible spotlight solution of all, see our track lighting collection.
A single ceiling spotlight features one adjustable head on a ceiling rose or surface-mounted base. These are well suited to directed task lighting or accent lighting: above a desk, beside a bed, angled onto a piece of artwork. They give precise control over where the light falls without committing an entire ceiling to a specific scheme.
A spotlight bar mounts to the ceiling as a single unit and carries between two and six independently adjustable heads along a fixed rail. Spotlight bars are particularly popular in kitchens and dining rooms, where multiple light sources are needed but a full track lighting system would be over-specified.
The heads on a bar can typically be rotated and tilted independently, which means you can direct each one onto a different area from a single fitting. A spotlight bar ceiling installation requires just one electrical connection, making it straightforward for an electrician to fit during a renovation or rewire.
Multi-head ceiling plates (typically two, three, or four heads mounted on a flat circular or square base) offer a similar principle in a more compact form. These are popular in living rooms and bedrooms where the fitting is as much a design feature as a light source.
The majority of spotlights in Lyco's range use LED light sources, either as integrated fittings or as GU10 ceiling spotlights that take a standard replaceable GU10 LED lamp. LED spotlights use significantly less energy than older halogen equivalents and last considerably longer, which makes them a sensible choice whether you're fitting out a single room or specifying across an entire property.
Adjustable ceiling spotlights with a warm white output (2,700–3,000K) suit living spaces and bedrooms, while cooler temperatures (4,000K) are better for kitchens, bathrooms, and workspaces where clarity matters more than atmosphere. All orders over £70 qualify for free delivery, with same-day dispatch on the vast majority of products across this range.
What is the difference between a spotlight and a downlight?
The terms are often used interchangeably, but they refer to different things. A downlight is typically a recessed fitting that sits flush with the ceiling and directs light straight downward, and it's fixed in position to produce a symmetrical pool of light beneath it.
A spotlight is usually surface-mounted and has an adjustable head that can be angled to direct light in a specific direction, whether that's straight down, at an angle, or onto a particular feature or surface. Spotlights are more flexible than downlights because they can be redirected after installation; downlights offer a cleaner, more integrated appearance.
How many spotlights do I need for a room?
A widely used starting point is to aim for one spotlight per 1 to 1.5 square metres of floor space, with heads positioned roughly that same distance away from walls to avoid casting shadows. In a standard 15 square metre kitchen, that suggests somewhere between 10 and 15 recessed downlights. That said, the number also depends on the lumen output of each head, the ceiling height, the reflectivity of the walls and floor, and how much natural light the room receives.
Are GU10 ceiling spotlights better than integrated LED spotlights?
Both have genuine advantages depending on your priorities. GU10 ceiling spotlights take a replaceable lamp, which means if a bulb fails or you want to change the colour temperature or beam angle down the line, you can do so without replacing the whole fitting. This makes them more flexible and often more cost-effective over time.
Integrated LED spotlights have the light source built in, which typically produces a slimmer, more compact fitting and is slightly more energy-efficient, but when the LED reaches the end of its life, the whole fitting usually needs replacing.
Can adjustable ceiling spotlights be used in bathrooms?
Some can, but not all. Bathroom installations require fittings with an appropriate IP (ingress protection) rating for the zone in which they'll be installed. Zone 0 (inside a bath or shower) requires IP67 or higher; Zone 1 (directly above a bath or shower to a height of 2.25m) requires at least IP44; Zone 2 (within 60cm of a bath or shower) also requires IP44 as a minimum.
