Our range of fixed downlights is extensive, with the three big technologies represented: LED, fluorescent, and halogen. You can buy mains voltage or low voltage, dimmable or non-dimmable, and you can choose from a variety of Ingress Protection ratings - the higher of which signify a light’s suitability for bathroom use. A large proportion of downlights are also fire rated, so you can depend on them to not compromise the integrity of a ceiling in the unfortunate even of a fire.

Some of our downlights do not require a connection to earth, as they use a SELV circuit (Safety Extra-Low Voltage) for protection against electric shock. Available in a wide variety of finishes and embellished with some of the best brand names in the business, you’re sure to find the right downlight in our collection to suit your purpose.

Picking a light

In choosing fixed downlights you might want to consider how long they’ll be switched on for in any given day. If they’re likely to be always-on, it might be wise to avoid the less efficient light sources such as halogen and plump for LED or fluorescent technologies, even though halogen tends to be the least expensive of the three. With LED you have a light that is almost untouchable in its low-powered energy-efficiency, so that’s almost a no-brainer where lights need to be on 24/7. The initial investment will be quickly recouped in any commercial environment. Fluorescent energy-saving lights are a cheaper alternative that still offer much lower running costs than incandescent.

If, on the other hand, you need a natural downlight for detail-orientated work, with illumination that’s easy on the eye and highly colour accurate, halogen becomes a tough choice to beat. The Colour Rendering Index (CRI) inherently hits the maximum 100 with halogen or regular incandescent lighting, where other technologies have to puff and pant to get anywhere near. Although our eyes have evolved to compensate for all manner of artificial trickery, incandescent light sources are commonly perceived to be a more comfortable light less liable to cause eye strain.
