Research shows that burglaries soar by 38% when the clocks go back in Autumn, and the period between Halloween and bonfire night is statistically the worst time of year for burglaries, with domestic damage increasing by a staggering 160% during this time. With this in mind, October is chosen as National Home Security Month (NHSM), an annual initiative that seeks to raise awareness around the importance of home security, and educate homeowners of the dangers that lurk in the dark.

Shining a light on dark nights

The fourth week of National Home Security Month coincides with the end of daylight saving (29th October), and this time is specifically focused toward reminding property owners to tackle outside security, as criminals and burglars are more likely to be hiding under the cover of darkness.

The first step to protecting a property from the outside when darkness falls, is ensuring that sufficient security lighting is in place. Dusk to dawn lights are a great security option as they have built-in photocells that automatically trigger and switch on once ambient light falls below a certain level. Dusk to dawn lights are available in a wide range of styles, with something to suit every style exterior.

As well as creating the illusion that a property is occupied at all times, some dusk to dawn lights also have built in motion sensors (PIR lights) and will detect movement from up to 10 meters away. They are best positioned in dark corners, sheds, garages, and outbuildings and can be an extremely effective burglar deterrent. These types of lights are also incredibly energy efficient, as they only turn on when triggered by movement, and remain off the rest of the time.

For extra peace of mind, property owners should also consider a PIR wall light with built in camera. The ultimate in home security technology, these lights feature a motorised lamp that detects and follows movement, to give a sense of being watched, and can record video or capture still images. What’s more, the light will stay lit for 3 minutes after no further movement is detected, and a battery back-up preserves settings for added peace of mind.

Security starts at home

Property security is something that needs to be taken very seriously, not just during National Home Security Month, but all year round. And yet, a quarter of UK homeowners admit to having no security measures in place, with many only making the decision to secure their property following a burglary.

Protective devices and tools can help to protect a property against crime, but only to a point. Ultimately, the responsibility lies with the property owner to ensure the highest level of security is maintained at all times.

At the absolute minimum, windows and doors should always be locked at night and also when a property is vacated for any period of time, however short. Outdoor lights, smart systems, and alarms should be turned on and checked regularly, keys stored out of view, and surrounding garden shrubbery and trees tended to regularly. When it comes to property security, applying a little common sense goes an extremely long way, and it always pays to be extra cautious.
