Previously a stronghold of fluorescent lighting, weatherproof battens are now also available in LED form. These fittings are normally used in outdoor utility applications, including garage forecourts, car parks, and farm buildings.
Fluorescent v LED
One of the great advantages of fluorescent lighting is that it kicks out a lot of light for little initial cost. It is also extremely energy-efficient, with fluorescent T8 and especially T5 tubes delivering high lumen-per-watt performance.
LED battens are typically more energy efficient than T8 fluorescent equivalents, and closely matched with T5 fittings. Even when challenged for energy efficiency, LED technology offers numerous advantages. These include:
- Solid state form of lighting, offering more resistant to vibration and shock than fluorescent tubes.
- Superior cold weather reliability, usually down to around -20°C.
- No mercury content, making end of life disposal cleaner and easier.
- Unaffected by frequent switching.
Please note that dedicated LED battens do not accommodate replacement lamps.
Build quality and IP ratings
Weatherproof battens are usually made from shatter-resistant polycarbonate materials or similar, which protect against accidental damage or vandalism. Most of them have an IP65 rating, signifying a completely dust-tight construction and resistance to rain or jets of water. The latter is noteworthy, in that it allows easy cleaning maintenance with a low-pressure hose if required.
