Energy Saving GU10s
The GU10 is a mains-only strain of multifaceted reflector (MR) bulb, originally introduced by Sylvania in the late 1990s. This very commonly used bulb is suitable for a wide variety of applications, including track lighting, ceiling plates, and desk lamps.
Very commonly available as a halogen lamp, the GU10 is nevertheless well represented by fluorescent (energy-saving) and LED technologies too. Of the three, halogen has the advantage of being a natural, crisp light with inherently high colour accuracy. That makes it great for colour-critical displays or task lighting, but its relative inefficiency means that halogen is vastly more expensive to run.
At the other end of the scale we have LED: an exciting technology that outpaces its rivals on numerous fronts. The initial cost is significantly higher, however, and shouldn't detract from the fact that fluorescent lights are extremely long lasting and energy-efficient - using around a quarter the power or less of an incandescent equivalent.
A further advantage of fluorescent is that you tend to get a broader choice of available colour temperatures, whether you’re looking for a warm or cool white light. Cool white is often recommended as being a better choice for task purposes.
If you’re looking to cut down significantly on running costs and maintenance without the upfront expense of LED, our retro-fitting energy-saving GU10s are a wise way to go.
