Secateurs are short-handled loppers, designed to cut thinner stems than their larger counterparts. Just like loppers, they come in bypass and anvil designs:
- Bypass secateurs deliver a cleaner cut with a scissor-like action, and are generally favoured for cutting soft plant stems.
- Anvil secateurs use a direct crushing style of cutting (i.e. the blade meets a solid surface rather than bypassing it). This can sometimes damage softer plant stems, so anvil secateurs are more often used for cutting dry, dead, or hard wood.
Secateurs will usually have a non-stick surface to maintain cutting performance, avoiding clogging by residue or sap.
