Wall washing is a term given to any type of light that spills over a large part of the wall, without creating ambient light to fill the whole room. It is a very contemporary type of lighting effect that can be used to great effect as part of a cohesive lighting design scheme, in conjunction with task lighting and ambient lighting.
When the wall wash spreads over a large area, it is very gentle, giving relaxing background lighting. It can also be used over a more narrow area for dramatic effect, especially when several are used together.
The types of lighting we stock that are suitable for wall washing include:
Angled Downlighters
We stock a huge range of downlighters, in a variety of beam widths. An angled downlighter can be positioned on the ceiling a short distance from the wall (typically 35-55cm) and will provide a good quality wash of light.
Uplighters and Corner Uplighters
Wall uplights typically are designed to throw light upwards to bathe the wall above them in light. Corner uplighters create a wall-wash effect in corners of rooms, and look stunning situated behind plants.
Wallwashers
Some lights are specifically designated as wall washers, as they are designed to spread light evenly over a large area.
Up/downlighters
These tubular style lights, usually with halogen bulbs, have a light source shining both up and down. As the light is positioned close to the wall they create a dramatic column of light.
