The world famous padlock makers Master Lock was founded in 1921 by locksmith Harry Soref. He quickly patented his unique laminated padlock design and began production in a humble one room factory in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, with just five employees.
Although engineers and manufacturers he had shown had rejected his prototypes, his confidence in the idea and the superiority and strength of his product gained popularity with the public. They associated weight with strength and the company grew rapidly. Houdini even sought Soref's expertise in the 1920s, after failing to escape from a set of sheriff's handcuffs.
Now, Master Lock sells over 50,000,000 locks per year, and is world renowned for its security products, having also recently branched out into other security products like automotive, labelling and computer markets. It is one of the world's most recognised and trusted brands. Master Lock continues to build on its success by developing new and smarter security products.
